The motherboard (or main-board) is the most important piece of hardware in a computer. This is a device that must withstand extreme temperatures and to cope with being constantly stopping and re-started. To ensure that the motherboards are able to meet exacting tolerances are developed and implemented with care and attention to detail. Each component and device associated with a specific computer depends on the motherboard. When connected to your computer in any medium, through a port, expansion slot, Universal Serial Bus (USB) or wirelessly via Bluetooth or infrared, it’s all about supporting the motherboard. There is much more complex circuits to these than meets the eye. A modern day motherboard is a complex piece of circuitry that deserves further investigation.

motherboard

As a mother it is produced

The design and manufacture of the computer’s motherboard is a long and complicated process. To develop a new motherboard means working closely with the manufacturer of the chipset central processing unit (CPU). New high-end motherboards are designed to incorporate the latest innovations in technology. Once the manufacturer of the chipset and motherboard manufacturer are happy with the design go into production.

motherboard

The motherboard manufacturer will design several similar motherboards based on the same chipset. The product will have different characteristics as required by their expected price range on the market. In some cases the cooperation of the chipset makers will require specific elements or components to be added to products. Like all industries the dominant factor with regard to the specific components used and is cost. The low-end motherboards rarely or not contain the most advanced technologies that can be found in more expensive high-end cards.

motherboard

The actual process of production of motherboards is far more complicated than we realize. It would be easy to think that these complex hardware components are built on production lines of robotic machines. In fact the process of manufacture of the motherboard is only partially automated and is based more heavily on human labor.

motherboard

The first part of the process is the addition of surface-mount technology in a vacuum or a bare printed circuit board (PCB). Welding is carried out automatically by the heating of the Board of Trustees and re-set pre-applied solder. The major components are in a situation of human work before the boards are inspected and tested. The circuit undergoes a series of intensive tests usually including a burn-in test. This is a specific procedure that recreates the extreme stress that the device encountered during his life. Once the board has passed the quality control can be packaged and ready for retail distribution. The entire manufacturing process takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

motherboard

Central processing unit and support chipset

The chipset central processing unit is important because it is an integrated technology. The chipset is optimized to work with a specific CPU. The chipset can not be removed or updated. The integrated chipset requires that the central processing unit is compatible with your motherboard.

Graphic Chipset Support

Some motherboards have on board low-end embedded graphics adapter. In the most advanced high-end motherboards graphics cards are added by means of an expansion slot on the motherboard. Current technology is PCI Express (PCIe), which replaced PCI and AGP, respectively. A major step forward in support of the motherboard graphics chipset was the inclusion of both NVIDIA SLI and ATI Crossfire on the same motherboard. This means that the end user has the option of installing a Nvidia graphics card or ATI Radeon graphics card.

Bus Speed

The term bus is used to describe the architecture of data transfer within the computer systems and electrical circuit boards. It derives from the word that is a strip bar (or hollow tube) of copper or aluminum used to conduct electricity more commonly in electrical substations. This term is borrowed and now exclusively used to describe the low-speed data transfer in a computer system. The bus speed is the calculated rate of data transfer and is measured in megahertz.

motherboard

Chipset Northbridge

Most motherboard manufacturers include Northbridge and Southbridge chipset into their products. These chipsets are designed to prevent a bottleneck (slow) in the performance during the computer-intensive activities. The arrangement varies from board to board, but in terms of the basis of Northbridge (also known as the memory controller). In most cases, the Northbridge controls communication between the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing units (GPU) and memory. The northbridge chipset or the controller is a very important component of the motherboard.

Chipset Southbridge

The Southbridge chipset is responsible for communication between the slower components on the motherboard. In a typical system of the Southbridge controller communicates with the PCI bus, the Real Time Clock, Power Management and many other devices.

Finally, the continued development and evolution of motherboard makes this an interesting area to watch.

Of course price and HDMI audio capabilities aren’t the only factors when choosing a video card for your HTPC, so you might want to keep waiting — you know another few weeks — for a version that doesn’t take up two of your card slots for a fan that is no doubt anything but quiet. Anandtech is predicting you might have to wait another year for the perfect HTPC video card in the way of the 5600 series.
