Sky are getting ready to launch their new 3D TV service later this year by giving away their Sky HD Box, which will be used to stream the new 3D channels, for free as it hopes to get a critical mass of HD users before launching 3D TV.
Currently you can get a Sky HD Box for free at Sky.com/FreeOffer with free installation if you sign up to the Sky HD Pack online. This is the best deal there has been on Sky+ HD and is a clear sign that Sky want to maximise Sky+ HD users so that the launch of 3D TV has the best chance of success.
To watch Sky 3D TV you will need this new Sky HD Box, together with a 3D Ready TV and of course some 3D glasses. The two main questions about whether 3D TV will be successful centre on the actual TVs required to watching 3D TV and those 3D glasses.
Many consumers have only just recently just purchased HD Ready TVs and it is quite a leap of faith by Sky to assume that their customers will be willing to replace this HD Ready TV with a 3D Ready TV.
The second main area of doubt with 3D TV involves the glasses. Although they’ve come a long way from the days of cardboard frames with one green lens and one red lens, it’s still difficult to imagine families sitting around their new 3D TV all sporting these not so stylish 3D Glasses.
Sky is pretty confident that 3D TV is set to take off in a big way, and indeed they are not alone. Many of the big TV Manufacturers are investing a lot of money into developing 3D TVs ready to capitalise on TV services like Sky 3D TV. Only time will tell whether they are proved right, however.
